Have you ever thought about what the word "adventure" really means? Most people think of climbing mountains or traveling to far-off places. But what if I told you that adventure could be something much closer to home?
Garvit Sahdev enjoys understanding the ideas that shape our world. The Thoughtful Tangle is an initiative to share this journey and experience with friends who love to do the same. He selects one idea and dives deep into it to understand its basics, relevance, impact, and opportunities around it.
Words are interesting things. We're taught their meanings when we're young, and we rarely question them after that. The dictionary tells us that an "adventure" is something exciting, unusual, or dangerous. But who decided that? And why can't we change it?
I believe words should be free. Their meanings should be able to change and grow with us. Maybe my adventure looks nothing like yours, and that's perfectly okay.
Finding Wonder in the Everyday
Think about a child seeing snow for the first time. Their eyes grow wide, their mouth drops open, and they can barely contain their excitement. To them, this is the greatest adventure in the world!
But somewhere along the way, we adults lose that sense of wonder. The first snowfall becomes "just snow." The train ride becomes "just my commute." The walk through the park becomes "just exercise."
What if we could see these everyday moments through a child's eyes again?
Making the Ordinary Extraordinary
This morning, I rode my bike to work. Usually, I'd tell you it was nothing special. But today, I decided to make it an adventure.
I noticed things I normally miss:
The way the morning light filtered through the trees
The cool breeze against my face
The rhythm of my breathing as I pedaled
The smile from a stranger as I passed by
None of these things were unusual or extreme. But by being fully present in the moment, by really feeling and noticing everything around me, that ordinary bike ride became something special—it became an adventure.
The Art of Being Present
This idea of being fully awake to each moment has a name: mindfulness. It's about experiencing life directly, without getting lost in our thoughts about the past or worries about the future.
When you're truly mindful:
A simple cup of tea becomes a rich experience of warmth, aroma, and taste
Walking becomes a dance of balance and movement
Even waiting for a bus can become a peaceful moment of watching the world go by
These everyday activities aren't boring when we're truly present for them. They're opportunities to feel alive.
Reclaiming Our Childlike Wonder
Children don't need to travel to exotic places to feel a sense of adventure. They find it everywhere because everything is new to them. They're naturally mindful.
As adults, we can learn from this. We can choose to see with fresh eyes:
What if today's sunset was the first one you'd ever seen?
What if you listened to your favorite song as if hearing it for the first time?
What if you looked at your loved ones with the same curiosity you had when you first met?
This childlike perspective isn't childish—it's a skill that can bring richness back into our lives.
Finding Freedom in Perception
There's a special kind of freedom that comes from changing how we see the world. It's not about changing our circumstances, but changing our perception.
This freedom lives in our minds and hearts. It doesn't require money or special equipment. It only asks that we wake up to the life we're already living.
When we free ourselves from limited definitions of words like "adventure," we also free ourselves from limited ways of experiencing life.
Living a Full Life, Right Where You Are
I'm not saying you shouldn't travel or try new things. Those experiences can be wonderful! But I am suggesting that adventure doesn't have to wait for your next vacation or your next big life change.
Adventure can be found:
In the steam rising from your morning coffee
In the conversation with the cashier at your local store
In the feeling of your own breath, moving in and out
In the familiar walk home, seen with new eyes
Every moment has the potential to be lived fully, to be an adventure in the truest sense of the word—not because it's unusual, but because you're fully there to experience it.
A New Definition
So here's my new definition of adventure: Adventure is any experience, ordinary or extraordinary, that you approach with full presence, openness, and wonder.
By this definition, your life is already filled with opportunities for adventure. All you need to do is show up for them, with your heart and mind wide open.
Today, I invite you to join me in this practice of mindful living. Let's redefine adventure together, one ordinary, extraordinary moment at a time.
What everyday adventure will you notice today?
